Formée et reconnue dans le contexte de la scène newyorkaise des années 1950, Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) s’installe progressivement à Paris à la fin de la décennie, avant de fixer son atelier, en 1968, à Vétheuil, proche ainsi de Claude Monet, puis à Giverny. Mitchell travaille de mémoire, elle ne peint ni la réalité ni ses souvenirs, mais sa perception des choses et de l’espace. L’importance accordée au geste, le choix de formats imposants et l’utilisation de couleurs pures sont autant de caractéristiques qui situent son oeuvre dans le cadre de l’expressionnisme abstrait américain.
